Tower News

On Saturday, 10th May 2008 the St David’s Guild of Bellringers held their annual Striking Competition at St Teilo’s Church Llandeilo.

St Teilo’s Church is a beautiful church that has been recently renovated to a high standard. It was a lovely warm sunny day and the 7 church teams that attended were given a warm welcome.

The draw took place at 2pm. St Mary’s Pembroke had entered 2 teams A1 and A2, A2 had to ring 4th and A1 5th. Each team consisted of 6 ringers and both teams rang a method called Grandsire Doubles.

Each of the 7 teams had to ring 200 changes which takes about 12 minutes. An adjudicator marked each change looking for faults. The team with the fewest faults will win the competition and the guild shield. The teams rang until almost 5 o clock and it was a close thing between the 4 best teams. Only a few faults separated them.

After a nerve racking wait and a wonderful tea the adjudication took place. St Mary’s Pembroke A1 team, having the fewest faults, won the competition and hold the shield for one year.

This is the 59th year the shield has been competed for and you can see it proudly displayed in St Mary’s Church Pembroke.
